"My boss made us read it. It takes about a half hour to read, maybe a couple hours to discuss and a lifetime to live up to. A lot of stuff in it is pretty obvious but when presented in the story format that the author uses, it is pretty useful. We revisit a different chapter every couple months and a lot of my guys find at least moderately interesting and useful.

The real value comes when, as a leader, you start seeing examples of some of the situations and, while maybe not using the book as a playbook, you lean on some of the lessons to form your own approach.

I'm normally pretty opposed to leadership books, but this one at least didn't waste my time."

  • My boss made us read it. It takes about a half hour to read, maybe a couple hours to discuss and a lifetime to live up to. A lot of stuff in it is pretty obvious but when presented in the story format that the author uses, it is pretty useful. • I've been on the road lately for work. Sometime the drive because the same songs over and over again. NPR can be full of election news and debates. I wanted something more helpful in my career development. This book did not disappoint! This audiobook was great. Not too boring with a monotone feel. Would recommend!

PRO Easy to follow along with. I often have to stop and start the book on my commute. This book made it easy to do that.

  • None of the concepts were new to me but it was nice to hear it in a story telling manner vs. factual diatribe that can be rather boring. I do believe this is a great read for the new or struggling manager. It gives just enough that you hope they use it to start an additional learning path. I did find myself motivated to figure out how to best share some of the concepts creatively. And I did like the verbiage and positive vibe to the whole experience. It is a fast read as well so could be great for someone who is time crunched but could use to look at things a little differently. A good team read for a small group of leaders.
  • I've been an HR Manager for 20 years and have used this book several time throughout my career with my management teams as the basis of training to ensure they had those foundational tools to deal with the issues they faced in their work and build upon to further their careers. I don't think you'll see anything new in here, but it's presented in such a way that it's very practical. Although I believe the concepts and approach are geared more toward first-line supervision or newer managers, I've found this book to be a good refresher for more seasoned, higher-placed managers too. I'm actually about to order another group of books to use with my new colleagues.
  • This book tells the story of Jeff - a manager who wishes to improve his professional career and seeks the aid of a mentor - Tony Pearce. The consequent 8 Monday morning mentoring sessions are retold in this book.

A very easy, enjoyable and educative read, full of management/leadership gems. Highly recommended.

Below are the key learnings - as excerpted from the book

1- "Be A Driver - Until you accept total responsibility - no matter what - you will not be able to put plans in place to accomplish your goals. Transitioning from manager to leader requires you make difference decisions."

2- "People have different perceptions of what the main thing is. People quit people before they quit companies."

3- "First, hire good employees. Second, coach ever member of the team to become better. And third, dehire the people who aren't carrying their share f the load."

4- "Get out of management land. Get in touch with your people. Your job is not to lower the bottom by adjusting and accommodating the falling starts. You should be raising the top by recognizing and rewarding superstar behaviors."

5- "Do the right thing - Develop your action plan before you get into a crisis. Guard integrity like it's your most precious management possession."

6- "Hire Tough - The most important asset in your company is having the Right People on your team. Never lower your standards just to fill a position! You will pay later."

7- "Do Less/Work Faster - Your time is your responsibility. Take control of your time so you can take control of your life. Look for small increments of time by prioritizing, limiting interruptions, and effectively managing meetings."

8- "Fill lots of buckets - 4 ways to fill buckets know the main things, give feedback on performance, provide recognition, communicate the team score. The more buckets you fill, the more your bucket is filled."

9- "Jeff's Leadership commitments. I am responsible for my actions and my team's performance, no matter what the circumstances. I keep the main thing the main thing. I have a positive relationship with my boss. I escape from management land and stay in tune with my people. I recognize and reward superstar activity. I address problems in a pro-active manner. I do what's right even when no one is watching. I realize that everything I do counts toward my leadership score. I hire tough. I am an excellent time manager. I fill others buckets. "

10- "Live in the learning zone - get our of the comfort zone. Read 10 minutes a day. Listen to people. Give back. Set goals. Stay positive."

11- "For you to be the very best, you cannot allow yourself to become complacent in your comfort zone. You need to be reaching for improvement."

12- "So much of life is about attitude and how we handle what life throws our way. Life is good - even when a situation appears to be the worst."
  • This book is a short but powerful read. It was recommended to me by my mentor. I continue using the concepts to be a better leader, develop my team, and as I mentor other leaders. I recommend this book to others regularly and I do so now to all of you whether you think yourself a good leader or not. This is truly a gem. A leader's actions and inactions have long term consequences and this book is great at showing you just what those consequences can be.
