The Proactive Executive A CSuite Recruiter 5Step System for Achieving Greater Career Success Chris Nadherny 9781946229557 Books Reviews

  • I ordered this book based on a colleague’s recommendation. As a Wharton graduate, Goldman Sachs alum, and now a 30-something executive for a Fortune 20 company, I’ve sat through countless classes, professional-development workshops, and training sessions designed to dispense pearls of career-related wisdom. And so, forgive me, but I opened “The Proactive Executive” with a healthy dose of skepticism. Hasn’t it all been said before? What more was there to say?

It turns out that I was wrong. There was much more to say—and Mr. Nadhemy has said it. In my view, Mr. Nadhemy has managed to compose *the* essential, go-to guide for navigating your career and maximizing your professional potential. He distills his decades of experience as a top-flight executive recruiter into actionable lessons and principles that would help any reader at any stage from the wide-eyed young professional about to plunge into the real world, to the jaded, loyal employee whose advancement has stagnated but who aspires to do more. On a personal note, during the very same month that I read Nadherny’s book, I was able to directly apply his guidance to (i) resolve complex, day-to-day work situations and (ii) make tough, long-term career decisions.

I can’t recommend this book strongly enough. Read it. If you care at all about your career, you won’t regret it.
  • Even as an experienced COO and Chief Marketing Officer there is so much in this book that I’ve never been told or thought about as related to proactively managing my career. I wish I’d read it 10 years ago! No other book out there like this that I’m aware of. I now consider it a “must have” for any ambitious professional. I loved the self-evaluation exercise and how the profile elements in the exercise were woven into other content throughout the book. It makes so much sense. You can be very capable, however, if your capabilities and accomplishments are not presented effectively and perceived by others you are never going to get full traction. Your reputation is everything. Strategic and thoughtful self-promotion is essential and the book is very clear on how to accomplish this. The real-life stories and experiences of executives shared in “The Proactive Executive” are powerful. So glad to have read this book. Never too late. It’s like having a terrific executive coach in your corner!
  • Wow, a great book! Nadherny wastes no time getting to advice about how to manage your career. As he starts by telling you what it means to “manage your career”, you will think, “Yes, I need to do that.”.

His clear prose make it easy to move quickly through the book, and he summarizes each section with “take-home-points”. This will make it easy to follow-through.

I was lucky to begin my career with an Ivy League education, good people skills, and common sense, but I would have benefitted from reading this book long ago — if it had been available. There is a good chance that you will benefit too!
  • This book is not just for executives, it is really for ANYONE who wants to manage their careers. The five steps process in the book is a methodical and sure-work practical guide to manage your career. Even if you don't make it to the C-Suite, (not everyone wants to or is suitable for it) this book will help you in achieving a rewarding and meaningful career.

The book starts with changing your mindset and doing some inner searching on the priorities of your life (the first step), all the way to practical tips on how to build your skill sets for the big job you want, how to write resume, do job search, conduct interviews and manage the transition (step five). The book also gives so many role models who share their experiences.

I want to give TEN stars, even though five is the maximum. I will wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone, including my wife, my kids, and even my grand kids when they are ready.
  • This is an exceptional book about how to holistically and strategically manage your career with a long-term view. Something I have not thought about often enough. The author’s perspective on the impact of talent market supply and demand on an individual’s career is profound. The insights regarding positioning and differentiation, as well as, the EPAM self-diagnostic (Executive Profile Attractiveness Measure) are incredibly valuable. The pursuit of growth environments is another fundamental lesson. The book is comprehensive but simple to understand and has dramatically reshaped my thinking. I am already putting a number of the principles and action-steps into play. Reading the examples of what other executives have gone through, learned, and changed was reassuring. This is a excellent book and resource for aspiring professionals who want to improve their trajectory.
  • As a Harvard JD/MBA and executive who has spent 25+ years in both for profit and non-profit leadership roles, I found the Proactive Executive to be an invaluable resource for managing your career. Particularly for readers who aren't as familiar with the nuances of what senior recruiters look for, the author provides significant details from his experience at Spencer Stuart. He offers practical advice, too, as well as presentation tips to enhance one's future career.

The self-evaluation and 5-step system really help the reader consider their career path to date and how to optimize next steps. The lessons presented are useful across a wide range of industries and will be invaluable to most any reader, as guidelines are provided for how to build your career, as well as current next steps for more senior leaders.

I highly recommend The Proactive Executive as an indispensable guide for considering next steps in your career, as well as career management and planning.
