Loving Donovan Bernice L McFadden Terry McMillan Books Reviews
- I read lots of reviews before buying this book and I have to agree with most of them in saying the end of the book just seems to fall apart. The falling out of the main characters definitely seems undeveloped towards the end as if it was a rushed wrap-up. The early stages of the book can also be quite confusing with the various names and character introductions. I found myself re-reading parts multiple times just to connect the dots. Also, it was a little uncomfortable to read the [spoiler] molestation scenes and even the constant rapings. I didn’t like that at all. It was over the top for me.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it took me over a month to get past the first few pages as it didn’t grab my attention. After trying again, I finished the book in one work day, it was a quick read or maybe work was just really slow that day. Lol. - I never felt a connection between Donovan and Campbell as lovers so perhaps I shouldn't be totally surprised as to how they ended as a couple. I feel the story ended abruptly as if McFadden simply got tired of writing and just called it a wrap. When I came to the last page in the book I was certain technology had struck again and that some pages were mistakenly omitted from my iBook. The good, like previous McFadden novels, the writing style was remarkable but I desired more of a complete ending. I was left with so many unanswered questions, especially in reference to Donvan regarding his past.
I have completed 5 other McFadden titles that I consider exceptional and have given no less that 4 stars. Even though this particular read fell unexpectedly short for me, because of my reading experience with McFadden's past material, she remains one of my favorite authors, as I know what she is capable of. - It's interesting how life can be like a play. Everyone has they're rôles and lines. If someone says or does something out of character, there's no one to say cut or coach them in a different direction. So they stay stuck. Doing what they know. What's been handed to them
I so wanted Donovan to get help and overcome and release himself from his predators grip. He deserved happiness. Oh and Grammy's grip as well.
I would have wanted to see more development from Elaine's character. It appeared she may have struggled with something developmental as a child. I wasn't quite clear.
Luscious was a dear. She may have been able to help Donavon. In spite of her issues she helped keep Campbell sane.
Lastly, Campbell. I felt as if it were happening to me. Riveting! This is why Bernice McFadden is truly gifted in this area of drawing you into the characters lives. - It is this reviewer's opinion that Bernice McFadden's latest novel, Loving Donovan, is another hit! She cleverly and thoughtfully reveals the stories of Campbell, Donovan, and their relationship. The "Her", "Him", and "Them" chapters are told in true McFadden fashion. She takes us back to the beginning - rewinding time and starting with the very young Campbell and Donovan and slowly moving them into adulthood.
Through carefully placed flashbacks, we transcend generations and meet Campbell and Donovan's grandparents and parents in their younger state of being. We experience their pain, joy, shame, and fears. We learn their most scandalous and guarded secrets and begin to understand all the complexities and dynamics that shape their thoughts and actions. We clearly see the cycle of desolation that ultimately molds and influences Campbell and Donovan. The families are dysfunctional, the homes are broken, no one is perfect, but they are doing the best they can given the circumstances. McFadden gives us just enough to understand Campbell's quest for love and to empathize with the troubled, delicate psyche of Donovan. Will Donovan and Campbell overcome the personal baggage to embrace love? Can they supercede their haunting, painful pasts for a promising future together? Read to find the answers.
It is the beauty of McFadden's words, pacing, and storytelling style that keeps the reader mesmerized throughout the book. This reviewer finished the book in one sitting. Her writing style is simplistic, precise, and rhythmic which makes it so easy to visualize images, hear the voices, and feel the emotions. Loving Donovan will not disappoint McFadden fans...I loved it and cannot wait to see what she presents next.

APOOO Bookclub, Nubian Circle Book Club - This book came highly recommended from a friend who is an author. This was my first taste of Ms McFadden and I must admit that I love her diction and storytelling ability. She weaves us into the lives of her characters and it is as if you are watching their lives unfold. This story will take you through every emotion and by the end... Exhale.... well, you'll just have to wait and see for yourself. Upon completion of this book, I immediately went to look for its sequel. There is none. Although it is one of her earlier novels, I hope that she will consider finalizing this work. I have already started reading another book by Ms McFadden, The Warmest December.
The only negative comment I will make is that there were multiple spelling/grammatical errors in the version. I overlooked them because I know how the upload process can be but to those who are first time readers these errors take away form the beauty and fluidness of her writing. This is sole reason I gave the rating 4 and not a 5 stars.
