Larry Leavitt once lived in Everett, Massachusetts, close to Somerville, where Buddy McLean lived. He had relatives in Somerville who were friendly with Buddy. The author currently lives in Peabody, Massachusetts, where he teaches physical education in the public-school system. He is married, and has a daughter and two sons. This is his first book.

- Wow! Intricate weaving of people and timelines. I grew in in Somerville and personally know the Mclean Family, but never knew the story. The details of the places and the people made the story come alive and took me on a trip down memory lane.
- .Great read. Read in one day and could not put it down. Leavitt’s writing style made for easy and entertaining reading. It was fascinating to see how and where the Winter Hill gang was born. Buddy Mclean’s character was captivating... a real human being with a larger than life personality. I can definetly see this becoming a movie. A must read for anyone interested in the origins of the greater Boston gang wars!!!

- If you know Boston--the Boston not of the tourist, but the Boston of the common man--you will love this book. It's real and its just a lot of fun. These are bad guys, but they are human beings too. That's what its all about in Boston. I lived there for a long time, and I did, indeed, come to learn that there's more to know, love, fear, and enjoy, than just what's going on in the papers. Lots more!
We often forget that.
But not in Boston, where personalities rule and the bad guys, the cops, the MDC cops, the pols, and the citizens are the real rock stars.
Buddy McLean is real. Thanks, Larry Leavitt, for showing us.
Now go out and buy this book. You wont be sorry. - I'm not a huge fan of non-fiction books but picked up "Loved and Feared" on the recommendation of a friend ... so glad I did. It was the best book of its genre that I've read. Leavitt has such a way of bringing each character to life and his writing is so tight that not a word was wasted. I sometime find myself skimming over pages of useless detail in books, but that didn't happen once in "Loved and Feared". The book is deeply emotional as well. I actually cried at the end. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if a move adaption was made for it. Highly recommend buying this book. You won't be disappointed. Hats off to the author,,,,very well done!
